Mathieu Agee was the first of the family to come to America. A Huguenot, he left France in 1688, went to Holland and with some two thousand Huguenots, joined the ranks of William of Orange and accompanied his troops to England where William deposed the catholic King James and assumed the crown. In recognition of the aid rendered to his cause, William offered passage to the new world. A large number of these French refugees Including Mathieu took advantage of this offer.
Mathieu Agee arrived in Virginia in 1690, received land grants west of Richmond and built a plantation about seven miles where the Huguenots founded the town of Manikin[1]
Mathieu Isaac Agée (ca. 1670 - ca. 1761), a Huguenot (French Protestant) of noble birth, emigrated from France to the English colony of Virginia in about 1700/1701. It's likely that he had previously fled France for England, due to the persecution of French Huguenots after King Louis XIV revoked the religious-toleration "Edict of Nantes" in 1685.
In Virginia, he married fellow-Huguenot refugee, Ann Gandovin, in about 1714.[2] They had at least 4 children: Isaac, James, Judith and Anthony. The family settled in Powhatan County, Virginia, and later moved to Buckingham County, Virginia. Mathieu died in about 1761 in Buckingham County, Virginia.
Their descendants (chiefly spelling the surname Agee) live in Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Texas, New Mexico, California and elsewhere.
Mathew Age' very probably came in one of the five ships bring Huguenots to Virginia in 1700 or 1701. No passenger lists have been found for the third and fifth ships. He appears regularly in the tithe lists of King William Parish as shown in the Vestry Book. An undated list of ca. 1714 shows him with wife and no children; this list may be found in Brock's "Huguenot Immigration to Virginia", page 74.
He was given a patent (PB 10,page 282 -ca. 1715) for 221 acres in the "upper part of the last 5000 acres set aside for the French Refugees." This tract was at a place now called Five Forks on State Rt. 711, Powhatan Co., Va. He next patented (PB 12, page 337 - ca. 1725) 400 acres on Jones Creek and east side of Mathieu's Branch and 400 acres on the west side of Mathiew's Branch adjoining land of Jean-Pierre Bondurant. In 1738, he patented (PB 18, page 221) 300 acres near Magnum Lapis (Flat Rock). He gave his son, Anthony, 100 acres of this last tract. In 1749 he patented (PB 29, page 1) 400 acres on branches of Troublesome Creek in Buckingham Co. Va.
Then in 1756 he patented 1280 acres on Hubbards Creek near present Dillwyn, Va. He sold his land in Powhatan Co., Va. on July 25, 1755 and moved to Buckingham Co., Va.
Mathieu Age' and his wife, Ann, deeded 400 acres to "my beloved son, James: in 1761 and this is the last record that has been found on him. The local records of Buckingham Co., Va were destroyed by fire in 1869.[4]

A triangulated group has been discovered that shares Mattieu Agée and Cecelia (Gandovin) Agee. as most-recent common ancestors. They share an 8.9 cM segment on chromosome 9.
Note: More paper research needs to be done to confirm Jane/Susannah (Agee) Anglin and Anne (Agee) Bernard as daughters of Mathieu and Cecelia, but the DNA connection is considerable.
A triangulated group on GEDmatch has also been discovered for this couple consisting of Shannon Dufour, LJ (grandchild of Burnard Agee), and SH (grandchild of Lillie Jones) who share a 14.3 cM segment across chromosome 5. Shannon is descended from James Agee and LJ and SH are descended from Anthony Matthew by his sons Daniel Agee and Matthew Agee. Shannon and LJ are 7C1R; Shannon and SH are 7C1R; and LJ and SH are 6C. Their most recent common ancestors are Matthieu Agee and Cecelia Gandovin.
Mathieu was born about 1685. He passed away about 1761.

Chateau du Houx Minichy Ille-et-Villane NOTE: I had noted that Matthieu DESAGES, born in 1658, had lived at the Manor and had emigrated in the United States in 1688. I do not have the sources of this information. I do not know the exact relationship between Mathieu DESAGES and the DESAGES above.

He seems to be the same Mathieu, but the birth and death dates are completely different.
