Biography
Tassilo II (742- 11 Dec or 5 Jan after 794) was the Duke of Bavaria after the death of his father, Odilo, and a takeover by Frankish invaders. The Frank usurper Grifo was deposed by his own brother, King Pepin, and Tassilo restored to the duchy, with his mother as regent until his majority. Tassilo swore allegiance to Pepin, King of the Franks, from 757 to 763.
In 787 he swore allegiance to Charlemagne, but rebelled a year later, which ultimately resulted in the conquering of Bavaria in 788, the forced renunciation of Tassilo's duchy, and his entering a monastery at Jumièges (Normandy, France) in 794, where he seems to have lived out his life. [1][2]
Father: Odilo, Duke of Bavaria (d. 18 Jan 748; p. unknown).[2]
Mother: Chiltrudis "Hiltrude" (d. 754; p. Charles Martel and Chrothrudis).[3]
The last of the Agilolfing dukes of Bavaria, Tassilo III, was the son of
duke Odilo by Hiltrud daughter of Charles Martel. This is not in dispute.[3]
Tassilo married Luitberga, "Luitpirc" of the Lombards (d. after 788; p. Desiderius and Ansa).
