William Ahern was aged about 60 when he was tried in Limerick on 13 March 1848 and found guilty of "assaulting habitation". He was sentenced to transportation for life but never actually made the journey. The Irish records stated that "the convict died in Spike Island Gaol, County Cork"[1] Prior to his journey to Cork, William Ahern had been sent to Smithfield Prison in Dublin[2].
