Biography

Nicholas was born in Germany about 1814. He was the son of Nicolaas Ahrens and Magdalena Oland
He married Geertruida Dekker at 29[1]
He emigrated first to England and then to the United States with his family.

He married Gertruida Dekker in 1843 in Sneek, Friesland, the Netherlands. Their oldest daughter Helena Gertrude was born there in 1843. They then emigrated to England where they had one son, Robert in 1849.

They finally emigrated to the United States and had two other children - Nicholas John Jr. born in 1854 and Alexander born in 1857.

It appears from the documentation that Nicholas enlisted as a footman in the 41st New York Infantry during the War between the States. He died on November 3rd, 1861 in Washington DC and is buried at the US Soldiers' and Airmen's Home National Cemetery, Washington, District of Columbia - Plot: Site F 623.

The following is taken from New York in the War of the Rebellion, 3rd ed. Frederick Phisterer. Albany: J. B. Lyon Company, 1912.

"The 41st Infantry was raised by the Union Defense Committee of New York city, under special authority from the War Department; organized at Yorkville, and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years June 6 and 9, 1861. The regiment was composed of Germans recruited in New York city.... The regiment left the State July 8, 1861; served at and near Washington, D. C., from July 10, 1861; in the 4th Division, Army of Northeastern Virginia, from July 17, 1861; in W. T. Sherman's Brigade, Division of Potomac, from August 4, 1861; in 1st, Martindale's, Brigade, Porter's Division, Army of the Potomac, from September, 1861; in Blenker's Division, Army of the Potomac, from October 15, 1861; in Stahel's Brigade, Blenker's Division, Army of the Potomac, from January, 1862." According to Documents found at the New York State Military Museum and Research Center.

AHREINS, NICOLAUS.—Age, 40 years. Enlisted at New York city, to serve three years, and mustered in as private, Co. F , September 27, 1861; died of disease, November 3, 1861, in hospital, Georgetown, D. C.
