Henry Ahrens, Sr. since more than sixty years a resident of the community to the southwest of Staunton, Friday evening at 8:30 o'clock passed away at his home having attained the ripe old age of 84 years, 9 months and 4 days. Death was due to diabetes, augmented by senility. Mr. Ahrens was born at Hannover, Germany, and when about 17 years of age came with his parents to America, the family locating in the vicinity of Staunton. For several years the subject of this sketch worked as a farm hand and then, following his marriage in 1866 to Miss Katherine Gardner, took up farming on his own account, settling on the home place where he spent almost sixty years of his life. Mr. and Mrs. Ahrens were the parents of two children, a son and a daughter, both of whom survive. About 11 years ago the wife and mother passed from this life. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the family home, Rev. H. Niedernhoefer officiating, interment being at the Spangle cemetery. Those left to cherish the memory of a kind and considerate father are one son, Henry Ahrens, Jr. and daughter, Mrs. Emma Brase of Edwardsville, besides other more distance relatives and friends. Mr. Ahrens was a member of the old Braunschweig church. Through hard work and strict economy he made a success of his chosen vocation and acquired a reputation for fair and square dealing with his 13 November 5, 2007 2:21 PM fellow man, a higher tribute than this can be paid to no one.
