Biography

Thirza Aiken was born in 1856, the seventh of eight children of Thomas Aiken and Diana Miller. The 1856 birth year is approximate based on the two censuses referenced below. She was also known as "Tirzah" and "Tirza"

Since her mother had died when she was only four years old, she first appears on the 1861 census with father and siblings only.^[1]. In early 1861, a step-mother, Caroline, had joined the household, only to be replaced by a second stepmother. Sarah, in 1863.

In 1871, Thirza was again listed with her father and siblings, but this time with her step-mother, Sarah, as well.^[2] Though born in Glen Sutton, she moved with her family to nearby West Potton when still a girl.

She married Stephen W. Sargent, son of Rogers Sargent Marinda Miller, in the 1873 to 1875 period. Thirza and Stephen were second cousins as a result of their common Miller heritage. The couple had a single child, as follows:

1. Edson, b. 26 Nov. 1876; m. Mary Casey, 4 May 1898; d. 24 Nov, 1922

Thirza passed away in 1877, at the age of only 21/22. The following notice appeared at the time:

WEST POTTON, October 9 (1877) = "At West Potton, P.Q., October 2nd, of consumption, Tirza, wife of Stephen Sargent, aged 22 years"^[3]

She was interred in Ruiter Cemetery (Dunkin).^[4]

Her infant was brought up for a time by his grandparents, Rogers and Marinda Sargent, until his father re-married.
