Frank Henry Aiken was born in Youngstown, Ohio, on November 22, 1918. He was the second child and second son of Augusta Rossman and John Arthur Aiken. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] He had one older brother John Karl Aiken, born in 1916. He attended South High School in Youngstown, Ohio.
He married Janice Maxine Russell in Mahoning County, Ohio, on March 16, 1940. [1] They had two daughters, Bonnie and Janice.
At the time of the 1940 census, he was 21 and living with his 18-year-old wife in Youngstown, Ohio. He was a tester at a steel mill.
Frank registered for the draft in Mahoning County, Ohio, on October 16, 1940. This was the first registration for males aged 21 to 35 living in the continental United States. His draft card listed him as white, 5'8", blond with blue eyes, light-skinned, and weighing 135lbs. He was employed at Republic Steel Inc. as a physical laborer.
Frank was called to service in 1944. He enlisted on June 21, 1944, at Fort Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. His term of enlistment was "...for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law". [6] His service number was 35843791.
Frank was killed in action by German fire during WWII in Germany on April 18, 1945. He was awarded the Purple Heart. He was buried at Lake Park Cemetery in Youngstown, Ohio. [5]
