Edward was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1847.[1] He was one of three sons born to James R Aiken and Hannah (Henry) Aiken. (His brother James died in infancy, however.) He grew up in Cambridge, and the family moved to neighboring Somerville, Massachusetts, by 1860.[2] His father worked as a tin plate worker.
Edward was an 18 year old clerk of Somerville when he enlisted to serve in the Civil War. He mustered into Company B of the 5th Mass. Infantry on July 25, 1864, as a Corporal. He mustered out at the end of his 100 day term, on November 16 of that year.[3]
In 1881, he married Minnie Flagg, daughter of Alonzo and Hannah (Babbitt) Flagg, in Manhattan, New York.[4]
Edward died in 1922. He is buried at the Spring Lake Cemetery in Rockland, Massachusetts.[5]
