Biography

William was born about 1730. William Ames ... He passed away about 1782.[1]

Excerpt from "Ames Is The Name"-by Richard Ames ,1959 One of the Pioneers in the NYC lineage seems to be William Eames who died in 1792 in NYC. At that time, his will disinherited all the older sons, left his entire property to Margaret and made small bequests to the minor sons at home- Robert, Henry, William & Jacob. The family had apparently divided sides over the War of the Revolution, with some older boys moving west or helping the rebels- probably accounting for the disinheriting action. the younger sons would thus not be involved. In keeping with this theory, the oldest of the four remaining at home received one spanish dollar of total inheritance. The father himself, together with Ernest Aims of the same city was listed as tories, or loyalists during 1776-1781." Collections of the NY Historical Society Abstracts of Wills Liber 35 pg.297

Pg.117 "In the name of God, Amen. The 13th day of November, 1781, I William Eames, of New York, yeoman, being very sick and weak in body. All those debts and duties I owe, in right or conscience to be well and truly paid in convenient time after my decease. I leave to my son Robert, one Spanish dollar for my birthright. Unto my son Henry, one Spanish dollar. My sons to be excluded from having any claim to my estate. Unto my dearly beloved wife, Margaret, and my 2 youngest sons William and Jacob Eames, my two houses and lots (being leased estate), with all the buildings and household goods, money, now in my possession, or due to me, for their sole use. I make my dearly beloved wife, Margaret, and my trusty friend, David McConoughy, executors. Signed, William Eames Witnesses- Abraham Bininger and Thomas Dods, cordwainer, Peter Starling, Schoolmaster, both of the City of New York- Proved 27Oct, 1782"
