Biography

Alfred was born in 1837. He was the son of Alfred Ainger and Marianne Jagger. He went to school with the children of Charles Dickens, graduated BA Cambridge 1860, and took Holy Orders following the death of his father. His sister Adeline's husband died in 1865, and then Adeline died not long after, Alfred became guardian to their four children: two boys, and two girls Ada and Margaret. In late life he became chaplain to Queen Victoria, then to King Edward VII after 1901. His health declined, and he passed away in 1904, at his niece's home in Derbyshire.

His biography by Edith Sichel expounds his scintillating prose.
