Windsor and Richmond Gazette (NSW : 1888 - 1961) / Fri 21 Feb 1936 / Page 3 / GOLDEN WEDDING MR. AND MRS. JAMES AIRD HONORED LINK WITH FIRST SETTLER An event of special interest to Hawkesbury people was the celebration of the golden wedding of Mr. James Aird, the youngest son of Kenneth Aird, of Rothes, Scotland, and Mrs. Victoria Josephine Aird, youngest daughter of Thomas Rose, of Petersham, and late of Wiseman's Ferry, and a great-granddaughter of Thomas Rose, Australia's first free settler. The marriage was celebrated at "Hawkesbury," West-street, Petersham, on February 4, 1886, by the Rev. J. Parker. To commemorate the occasion, a party was held at the residence of the couple both of whom are 70— at 22 William-street, Hornsby, on Saturday, February 8 . Besides the five sons, their wives and 21 grandchildren from Camden, Singleton, Windsor, Richmond and Chatswood, there were many life-long friends present. There were also four of the original wedding group, including the bridesmaid, in attendance. Mr. A. F. Davis, a friend of Mr. Aird's from the first day he arrived in New South Wales, occupied the chair at the celebrations, and humorously referred to their exploits together, and stated that it was a remarkable coincidence that that happy event should take place exactly 53 years from the very day Mr. Aird left Scotland. The bridesmaid, Miss Buckingham (now Mrs. Underwood), Mr. Rose, Messrs Walter and Harry Halls (nephews), in short but happy speeches, congratulated the couple and wished them much happiness in the future. Fifty guests sat down to well-provided tables, and after the inner man had been fully satisfied, Mr. Walter Halls gave an interesting lecture, illustrated with moving pictures, of his travels through China and Manilla, which was very much appreciated, and promised to show them again publicly in the near future.
