Samuel Ayres was baptized in Egloshayle,[1] in Cornwall, on 22 June 1755. He was the second child and eldest son of William Air (of Egloshayle) and Grace Worden, who were married in St Kew[2] on 15 February 1753.[3]
FamilySearch provide an image of the page of the Egloshayle register on which Samuel's baptism is recorded.[4] In fact the image shows two consecutive pages of the register; Samuel's baptism is on the first of these two, about halfway down. The same image also shows the baptisms of Samuel's sisters Grace (on 27 February 1754) and Anne (on 31 July 1757).
William and Grace also had a daughter named Mary and a son named William, both of whom were baptized in the parish of St Issey,[5] Mary on 27 May 1759 and William on 23 March 1761. Again FamilySearch provide an image showing the two consecutive pages on which these baptisms were recorded.[6] The surname was recorded as Airs when Mary was baptized, and as Aire when William was baptized.
St Issey and Egloshayle are quite close to each other, separated by the parish of St Breock,[7] which is about 5 kilometres across.
William Aire (the father) was buried in St Issey on 29 November 1761, and his daughter Mary was buried in St Issey on 21 December 1761.[8] A Grace Aire, presumably William's widow, had an illegitimate son named Thomas baptized in St Issey on 15 December 1765.[9]
Samuel Aire married Agnes Anstis in St Germans[10] on 29 November 1779.[11]
The main reason for believing that this Samuel Aire was the Samuel Ayres baptized in Egloshayle is that their seems to be a Worden connection. Worden was Samuel Ayres's mother's maiden surname, and Samuel Aire's marriage was witnessed by a Samuel Worden. Conjecturally this was the same Samuel Worden who witnessed the marriage of Grace Eyre (believed to be Samuel's sister) to Richard Pinch in St Kew on 26 July 1777.[12] Unfortunately we cannot compare the Samuel Worden signatures on the two marriage documents since it seems that no image of the original record of Samuel Aire's marriage is available.
It is also the case that two of the children of Samuel's presumed sister Elizabeth Pinch were baptized in St Germans (see Elizabeth's profile). Furthermore, a William Aire who looks to be a good match for Samuel's brother was married in St Germans,[13] and a Grace Aire who looks to be a good match for his mother was buried in St Germans.[14]
