Biography

Harvey Airey (1897-1984) was born on the 4th August 1897 [1] in Shap, Westmorland where his father ran the local grocer's shop. He was the son of James Airey & Sarah Foster. [2] They lived in the Market Square at Shap. [3] [4]

He was educated at the local Shap Girls & Infant's school before attending Selside School from 1904. [5]

He served with the Lancashire Fusiliers in WW1 [6] [7] earning the DCM for his gallantry. [8]

Harvey Airey awarded D.C.M. 1918

He married in 1923 to Irene Southam in the West Ward district [9] and at some point before the war, moved to Penrith where Harvey was a railway signalman. [1]

At various points he was Chairman of the local Labour Party, Chairman of his local National Union of Railwaymen (N.U.R.) branch and also stood for the local council. [10]

He died on the 28th July 1984 in Penrith, Cumberland. [11] [12]
