Biography

Hannah Aisbitt (aka Aisbit, Aisbett, etc) was born in 1815 in South Shields, Durham, the daughter of John Aisbitt, a Pitman and his wife Ann Farrow. She was baptised in St Hilda's, South Shields on 16 April 1815.

She was recorded as "Deaf and Dumb from birth" in the Census of 1851 and 1861.

In 1841 Hannah Aisbett (age 25-29) lived at Sunny Brow in Brancepeth, Durham with her mother Ann (60-64) and brother Thomas (20-24).[1]

Hannah never married but had a daughter out of wedlock with an unknown father:

  1. Elizabeth (Aisbitt) Wales (1848-1916)

In 1851 Hannah Aisbitt (age 36) lived in Newbottle, Durham with her brother-in-law Peter Tate (46, Waggonman), sister Elizabeth Tate (40), four Tate nieces & nephews: George (18, Wagonman), Isabella (6, Scholar), Jane A (4), and Peter (0), mother Ann Aisbitt (71), and daughter Elizabeth Aisbitt (3).[2]

In 1861 Hannah Aisbitt (age 46) lived at Philadelphia near Newbottle with her brother-in-law Peter Yate [Tate] (55, Labourer), sister Elizabeth [Tate] (51), niece Isabella [Tate] (16, Agricultural Labourer), nephew Peter [Tate] (10, Scholar), mother Ann Aisbitt (82), and daughter Elizabeth Aisbitt (13, Scholar).[3]

In 1871 Hannah Aisbett (age 59, Labourer) lived in Philadelphia with her sister Elizabeth Tate (61), daughter Elizabeth Tate [Aisbitt] (23), nephew Peter Tate (20, Stoker), three great-nephews: John Tate (14, Coal Miner), Ralph Tate (12, Coal Miner), and George Tate (8, Scholar), sister's nephew John Dawson (0), and visitor William Wales (22, Coal Miner).[4]

In 1881 Hannah Wales [Aisbett] (age 66) lived at 40 Railway Terr in Herrington West, Durham with her son-in-law William Wales (32, Coalminer), daughter Elizabeth Wales (33), and three Wales grandchildren: Mary H (8, Scholar), Dora (4), and William (0).[5]

In 1891 Hannah Aisbet (age 74) lived at 40 Railway Terrace in West Herrington with her son-in-law William Wales (41, Coal Miner), daughter Elizabeth Wales (43), and five Wales grandchildren: Mary H (18, Out Door Work), Dora (13), William (10, Scholar), Alexander (7, Scholar), and Florence A (2), as well as her son-in-law's niece Jane Wales (18).[6]
