Alexander Aitken rented 2 Dalrymple Crescent from 1864 to 1865 He "worked for the firm of D. Mason & Co who were tea and coffee merchants based at 88 South Bridge. From Dalrymple Crescent he moved to 13 Chalmers Crescent where he lived until he died in March 1900 at the age of 82. He was born in Paisley, and in the 1871 census he reported that he was a tea dealer employing five people. His wife Elizabeth McLelland was some 14 years younger than him. She was born in Wigtown, as were the five eldest of his eight children. The children were: Margaret, born in 1855, William in 1856, Jessie in 1858, Susan in 1862, Grace in 1864, Bessie in 1867, Alexander in 1869, and Helen in 1870. The youngest three were born in Edinburgh, so the family must have moved to Edinburgh soon after Grace was born."[1]
He died in 1900, and is buried in the Grange Cemetery
