Lizzie was born about 1846. She was the only daughter of William Aitken, a grain merchant operating in Londonderry city, and Elizabeth Orr.
On 30 April 1866 at 3rd Presbyterian Church, Derry city, she(20) married Thomas Caldwell (first cousin), a merchant of Prestwick, Ayrshire, Scotland; son of David Caldwell, farmer. Witnessed by William Aitken and William Aitken jnr. [1] [2]
They came to New Zealand in 1866, settling on the South Moor Farm, Willoughby, Ashburton, where son William Aitken was born. About 4 or 5 years later, the family moved to a station at Matamata for about 5 years, and then Poverty Bay in 1884, finally settling at Tolaga Bay in 1891. Their other sons were D., T. H., and Douglas, the latter dying in the war. [3]
