Memorial services 10 a.m. at 12th Street Church of Christ, Hartshorne. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Antlers American 24 August 2000 Antlers, Oklahoma Newspaper Jack Akard Jack Akard, of Hartshorne passed away on Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000 at McAlester Regional Health Center at the age of 85. He was born March 27, 1915 near Antlers in Pushmataha County to Alfred Haywood and Mary Lucinda Helm Akard. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 12th Street Church of Christ in Hartshorne with David Sanchez officiating. The youngest of eight children, Akard graduated Moyers High School class of 1933 and enlisted the United States Army Corps in October, 1940. In January of 1942, at the beginning of World War II, he was shipped from South Carolina to South Africa, Australia and then India. Her served in the CBI theater of operations as Master Sergeant until the summer of when he was shipped across the Pacific to California, completing his trip around the world with the military. In 1945, when the war ended, he reenlisted to make United States Air Force his career and married Genevieve on May 22, 1946. Jack's work then took him to 13 states, Japan and Alaska and during this time each of their six children were born, each in a different state. Jack retired in 1960 after 20 years of service and entered civil service as a commissary officer and worked for 17 years in New Mexico, Kansas, Michigan, Texas, Ohio and Missouri, and retired as a GS13. He moved to Hartshorne in August of 1977. A year later, he established a wholesale battery distributorship and was self-employed for another 17 years. He was a former member of the main and Oklahoma Church of Christ in McAlester.
