Funeral services for William T. “Bill” Akard, 63, of Antlers, were held Tuesday, May 1, 1973 at 10:30 a.m. in the Mills Funeral Home chapel of Antlers with Dr. Irvin Stanke, paswtor of the First Christian church, officiating. Mr. Akard was born January 10, 1910 in Antlers and died early Monday morning, April 30, 1973, in the Pushmataha Hospital following a long illness. He was a retired auctioneer and rancher, having been one of the most colorful auctioneers for more than 30 years. He was associated with livestock sales all over Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, and Kansas. During those years, he spent many hours working with the different youth organizations, donating his time and energy for the betterment of same, especially those of the Future Farmers of America and 4-H clubs in Pushmataha, Choctaw, McCurtain, Atoka and Pittsburg counties. He was an honorary member of the Future Farmers of America and a member of the First Christian church. He is survived by one son, William Gregory Akard of Longview, Texas; four brothers: Roy Akard and Tom Akard of Antlers; Herbert Akard of Finley, and Jack Akard, Enon, Ohio, and two sisters: Mrs. Lois Cobb of Antlers and Mrs. Gene Warren of McAlester. Nephews served as active pallbearers as follows: Lew Akard, Bennie Akard, James H. Akard, Herbert Akard, Jr., Glenn Akard and Cornelius “Budd” Akard. Honorary members were Zwick Williams, Clyde Darnell, Grover Darnell, Harry Jeffers, Harley Hammons, David Stephenson, Claud Wallace, J. O. Goodger, Grady Holton, Bernie Moyer, Clarence Johnson, Grady Sterling and Corey Stephenson. Interment was made in the IOOF cemetery [Antlers] under the direction of Mills Funeral Home of Antlers.
