Research Notes

  • Ancestry.com's family data collection is just a collection of what people have input to their unsourced family trees. It should not be used as a reference. Similarly Ancestry's Millennium Files are simply a database of notes from many clients from a genealogy company that went under. While some of the data in them may be good, it's impossible to know the origin of the data in the Millennium Files and it should not be used as a source.
  • If Blackburn was born in 1730 he could not have been born in Albemarle County, Virginia, because it was not created until 1744.
  • Other cites like Geni and blogs can be treated as a starting point, but if they don't provide sources themselves they're not a real source.
  • Some cites that discuss Blackburn Akers but are completely unsourced and therefore cannot be considered sources themselves include:
  • The Akers children were born prior to his marriage to Susanna Skaggs in 1786.
  • This profile seems to be a combination of sources for William Blackburn Akers, Earl Blackburn Akers, and Thomas Blackburn Akers, none of which may have existed as separate individuals.
  • The following source has the wrong Susannah Skaggs as the wife of this Blackburn Akers (not William Blackburn Akers)[3]
  • Parents:
William Akers, III (William, William, William) was born before 1706 (1, 3), probably after February 1702 (2) and died after 1751 (1, 2, 3). Source 5 has his death as being about 1790 in Montgomery Co., Virginia (5). Earl Akers lists his death as about 1796 in Buckingham Co., Virginia (1).. He married Susannah Blackburn about 1730 in Buckingham Co., Virginina (4, 5). She was the daughter of William Blackburn and Elizabeth Tye. She was born about 1712 (1, 2, 3) and died about 1808 (2, 3). The Church of Jesus Christ Latterday Saints has her death as being about 1790 in Virginia (4, 5). Earl Akers has her death as being about 1801 in Buckingham Co., Virginia (1). Notes:
    • “William Akers III is the son of William Akers II, husband of Susannah Blackburn, father of Blackburn Akers, Sr., William E. Akers IV and John Akers. They lived in the portion of Albemarle Co VA which eventually became Buckingham Co VA and he died there in the late 1790s” (1)
    • Signed Power of attorney on 12 Apr 1751 in Cumberland Co VA stating that both his grandfather, William Akers I and his father, William Akers II, were deceased. (Cumberland Co VA Deed book 1, page 324)
    • The will of William Akers I signed 24 Feb 1702 precluded his son, William II, from having clear title to inherited land unless he had legitimate offspring. William II sold 98 acres to James Bougham, Jr. on 10 Apr 1706, establishing the birth of William III as being between those dates.
    • The Buckingham Co VA personal property tax roll for 1796 lists “estate of William Akers.”
    • He is on the Southam Parish, Goochland County VA list as are his brothers-in-law, John, William and Lambeth Blackburn and John Mossum.
    • for 175 acres on the North branch of the Willis River bounded by the land of William Blackburn. This land later became part of Buckingham Co.
    • Children:
  1. Blackburn Akers, Sr.
  2. William E. Akers, III
  3. John Aker

Akers-489 and Akers-572 appear to represent the same person because: According to Ronald L Aker's history (found here https://archive.org/details/westwardjourneya00aker/page/11/mode/2up ) the children listed for Thomas Blackburn Akers are the children of Blackburn Akers, wife of Elizabeth Blackburn. I don't know where the name Thomas came from. But these two men are the same person.

All children of Blackburn Akers were born prior to his marriage to Susanna Skaggs in 1786. Susannah Skaggs was their step-mother.

Akers-912 and Akers-572 appear to represent the same person because: It appears that the child, Adam Akers, is already listed as a child of this other individual. They both are similar, but research should be performed and any differences should be noted with proper sources within the profile of the individual. This should delete one of the many duplicates on wikitree.
