James was born on November 6, 1943 in Aberdeen, SD to M. F. (Pete) and Myrtle (White) Akin. He attended school in Redfield. James married Linda Fliehe in Tulare, SD on December 31, 1960. They had a son Teryl.
James joined the United States Air Force in 1960 and was stationed at Lockland Air Force Base in Texas. In 1961, he served in Korea as a petroleum/transport specialist. After his honorable discharge in 1963 he returned to Redfield. He was employed by Wilson Concrete Products, South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield and Spink County Highway Department. He moved to Moose Lake, MN and was employed by Duluth Public Schools for several years.
James was a member of the Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed landscaping, painting and carpentry work.
James is survived by his son Teryl of California, three grandchildren, his mother and step father Myrtle and Wilbur Herold and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was cremated and a memorial service will be held June 21, 2008 at the Wesleyan Church in Redfield, SD. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Redfield, SD.
