Biography

Rose Etta Akin was born in Winnemucca, Nevada to Henry N. Akin and Margaret Ellen Hatfield on November 15, 1875^[1]

On the June 5, 1900 US census of The Dalles, Wasco, Oregon, she was living with her husband Charles B. Adams, and his father, John Adams. She had been married to Charles for five years.^[2]

On the April 23, 1910 she was still in The Dalles, living with her father-in-law, her husband, and their two surviving children, Rose & Mildred. She had given birth to four children.^[3]

On January 9, 1920 she was living with her husband and two daughters, Rose & Mildred, in Saint Helens, Columbia, Oregon.^[4]

On April 14, 1930, she was the married head of household, working as a beauty shop operator, and living with two daughters (Rose & Mildred) in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington, USA.^[5] Where is her husband Charles?

On July 26, 1930, she is a witness at the marriage of her daughter, Rose Etta Adams to Alfred J. Faithfull.^[6]

In 1936, her husband Charles dies and is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Wasco County, Oregon^[7]

On the April 6, 1940 cenus, she is married living in her daughter and son-in-law, Rose & A. J. Faithfull's home in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington.^[8]

In July 1943 she was using the name Rose Etta Adams when she worked for the Automatic Screw Machine Company in Los Angeles, CA. ^[1]

On May 1, 1945, Rose married Colin Douglas Murdoch Sr. in Tacoma, Washington.^[9] They had no children. Colin died almost two years later, on January 13, 1947.

On September 16, 1947, Rose makes a Social Security "life claim" (for husband Colin's death in January 1947).^[10]

Rose is buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery, The Dalles, Wasco County, Washington, USA. The gravestone says "Rose Etta Adams, 1875 -1972, Wife of Charles."^[11]

I suspect that there may be an issue with Rose Etta Faithfull and the marriage you mention for your Colin Sr. It may originate in the fact that there are two Rose Adams that show up in the marriage records; one is Rose Etta Akin Adams and the other, her daughter, Rose Etta Adams.

Surely this could only have been Colin jnr. unless the Faithfulls divorced and she married a much older man.

If you take a look at the 1930 Census for District 117, Tacoma, Pierce, Washington; Family 137, you will find:

Rose Adams Daughter b 1907 Oregon Single

Smith Mildred Daughter b 1910 Oregon Widow age at first marriage 18

Rose Etta Adams Faithfull would have been your Colin Sr's step-daughter and Colin Jr's step-sister. Surely wife and step-daughter respectively.
