Andrew Foster Akins, (born 11 Apr 1879, bap. 25 Jun 1879)[15][16] Is 1st child same person as 2nd child? Could not find 2nd child's birth, marriage and death registrations. But Sarah Jane Akins mentions that she had 5 children which were recorded in the 1911 Census (see Research Notes).
In the 1881 Census, Percival Aiken (aged 25) lived at 110 Duke St. in the civil parish of Liverpool under his landlady, Annie Leary (50).[30] He was described as a Barman and single.
Criminal
Charge of Receiving Stolen Notes
At the City Police Court, this morning, before Mr T. S. Raffles, a well-dressed man named Percival was charged on remand with receiving £55, consisting of a £50 Bank of England note and a £5 note, well knowing the same to be stolen. It was stated that on the 24th of November last year Patrick Holden, a general dealer, was robbed of two notes of £50 and £5 whilst in a refreshment house in Tithebarn-street by a woman named Margaret Goodwin. She was afterwards sentenced to a term of imprisonment for the robbery, and while she was in gaol it was found out that she had disposed of the notes to the prisoner in a public house, 12 Gerard-street. The prisoner obtained gold for the notes, and, on the 11th of January, absconded to the Cape of Good Hope. He returned to England recently and was apprehended. He was now committed to the sessions for trial. - Liverpool Echo 18 September 1884[31][32]
On 22 October 1884, he was sentenced to 18 calendar months imprisonment with hard labour.[33][34][35]
1891, 1901 and 1911Censuses
In the 1891 Census, Percival U. Akins (aged 32) lived at the Hotel, 313 Stanley Road in the civil parish of Bootle Cum Linacre, Liverpool under his licensed Victualler, Thomas Pinnington.[36] He was described as the Barman and single.
In the 1901 Census, see the details shown below for research notes. As it is a bit inconclusive
In the 1911 Census, Percival E. Akins (aged 55) lived at 12 Nut St. West Gorton, Manchester.[12] He was described as a married man and a Commercial Traveller. He completed 33 years of the present marriage has lasted. He had a total of 6 children born alive but 3 children still living. He was working on his own account in Soft Goods, not at home.
Death and Burial
He died on 4 February 1913 at 12 Nut Street, West Gorton, Manchester[37][38]Perrione Catin Akins - seems that it is mistranscribed without the original image - (aged 56) was buried on 10 February 1913 in Gorton Cemetery, Manchester, Lancashire, England.[39]
Research Notes
His siblings' Birth, Baptism and burial
His second brother, Samuel Percival Akins was born in 1853 at 34 Albert Street, Everton, Lancashire and was baptised on 5 February 1854 at St Augustine's Church[40], Everton, Lancashire, England.[41] His father was a musician. Saml. P. Akins died at the age of 4 months ago at Lower Alfred Street, Everton on 12 February 1854, his cause of death was inflammation and was buried on 15 February 1854 at Necropolis (Low Hill Cemetery), Everton.[42]
His sister, Elizabeth Ann Akins was living in 1858 at Elm Road, Liverpool, and was baptised on 18 April 1858 at St Jude the Apostle's Church[43], Liverpool, Lancashire, England.[44] Her father was a professor of music.
His 3rd brother, Alfred Akins was born at 21 Hatfield Street, Liverpool and was privately baptised on 28 October 1859 at St Stephen the Martyr's Church[45], Edge Hill, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.[46] His father was a musician.
In the 1911 Census of England, his wife Sarah Akins (aged 53), House Keeper, was recorded as married at 26 Doddridge St, West Derby, Lancashire, England. She completed 32 years of the present marriage has lasted. She had a total of 5 children born alive but 3 children still living[47]
His older brother, William Wynn Akins died in Liverpool Workhouse at the age of 65 and was buried on 16 May 1913 in Parochial Cemetery, Rice Lane, Walton, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.[48]
In the 1861 Census, found Hatfield Street, on both sides, from Paddington to West Derby Street, is now gone and located around the Novotel Liverpool Paddington Village and The Spine Building, Liverpool, Merseyside.[49]
In the 1901 Census, John Akins (aged 44) lived at 12 Nut St. Gorton in the civil parish of Manchester with his sister-in-law, Kate Simpson (36).[50] He was described as a Law Solicitor's clerk and widower! Is John Akins the same as Percival in the 1911 census who was living at the same address as John's address? That census with John is very odd, isn't it? Firstly because of the name, though there's always the possibility of him going by a different name due to the prison sentence. Secondly, how can he be a brother-in-law to Kate Simpson, since she isn't married unless perhaps another Simpson married an Akin? Thirdly, the fact that it says he was a solicitor's clerk. John's birth year and birthplace same as Percival's result. It's all very odd!
The above marriage record mentions that bride's father is named Samuel Fairhurst which is incorrect. Samuel is her older brother or likely her paternal grandfather. Sarah Jane Fairhurst is the daughter of James Fairhurst and Eliza Nicholson. In the 1861 Census Sarah (aged 6) was the daughter of Eliza Fairhurst, and they lived at 8 Finch Street, Liverpool, Lancashire, England with her three siblings. Their house is shared with another two families (Herman and Cox).[51]
