Lieutenant William Akins Sr. served with Mecklenburg County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.
William Akins, Sr. was born 27 Jun 1756 in Cecil Co., Maryland. He moved with his family to Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, where his father James Akins purchased 202 acres of land in the Steel Creek area in 1777. William enlisted as a soldier in the North Carolina State Troops in 1777 and fought in the Revolutionary War, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. On 4 March, 1784, in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina, he married Elizabeth McCorkle, the daughter of Stephen and Anne (Forbes) McCorkle, and they settled in the area of Rock Hill, York Co., South Carolina, where they lived for nearly 30 years. William was appointed Constable of York Co., South Carolina in 1786, and was elected to serve as county sheriff in 1787. In 1793 he was appointed as coroner and in 1810 he served as the captain of the York County Militia. William, his wife and their children later moved to Morgan Co., Georgia, about 1817, then later relocated to Spring Garden in Cherokee Co., Alabama, where he died on 29 March, 1841 at 84 years of age.[1]
