Biography

Cecil Willard Akre .l.[1] He died on July 22, 2005 at Ponte Vedra Beach, Saint Johns, Florida.[2]

Obituary: Cecil Willard Akre, of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL, died on Oct. 26, 2005. He was born July 22, 1925 in Veblen, SD. He enlisted in the US Navy in 1942. At the close of the V-6 pilot training program, he applied for admittance to the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point. Upon graduation, he spent two years at sea transporting German prisoners for the Navy and later on commercial shipping vessels between New York and South America.
Mr. Akre then pursued further education in Hamlin University in St. Paul, MN, where he and his wife, Cynthia, were married. The couple moved to Washington, DC. He worked for Congressman E.Y. Berry of South Dakota while pursuing a law degree at Catholic University. He worked for TWA in New York as a legal advisor in properties and contracts. In 1962, he became a partner in Huntoon Paige, a Wall Street mortgage broker dealer. He retired as vice president of Merrill Lynch after it acquired Huntoon Paige.
Mr. Akre was an avid sailor and a member of Manhasset Bay Yacht Club in Port Washington. He also enjoyed trap shooting and pheasant hunting in South Dakota. For many years he carved and painted waterfowl. He won many ribbons at exhibits in Maryland and Long Island. He also exhibited his decoys at the Sawgrass Country Club Members Art Show. He was a member of the Jacksonville Wood Carvers Cluand the Jacksonville Gun Club.
For several years he worked in the Jacksonville Guardian Ad Litem Program. Before his illness he regularly attended the chapel at Sawgrass Beach. C
Family members include his wife Cynthia; daughters, Jane (Steve) Wilson of Ponte Vedra Beach and Nancy Akre of Pasadena, MD; son David (Jana) Akre of New York; granddaughter Alyx Wilson; sister-in-law Elizabeth Woolley; sisters, Bette Agee and Marjorie Tisch; brother Don (Ruth Ann) Akre; and a loving family of nephews and nieces.
A memorial service was held Oct. 29 at the Sawgrass Beach Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to Community Hospice of Jacksonville, 4266 Sunbeam Rd., Jacksonville, FL 32257. Services under the direction and care of Quinn-Shalz, a family funeral home and cremation center, Jacksonville Beach, FL.[3]
