When a young man he engaged in the manufacture of stump joints, the joints which are used on carriages to raise or lower the tops, there being only two factories of the kind in the US at that time.
He then worked for one year at farming, and on Jan. 28, 1856, he enlisted in the regular army, becoming a member of Company M, 1st US Heavy Artillery. This regiment was placed on the frontier, and he had a number of exciting experiences. On one occasion he was a member of a force of 300 Americans that defeated a band of 500 Mexicans under Cortena, the famous Mexican outlaw, and he now has in his possession a shot which was fired during that engagement. He also took part in some of the battles with the Seminoles in Florida, and during his term of service was twice promoted, first to the rank of corporal and then to that of sergeant, which he held until honorably discharged.
Beach served in the Army from 1/28/1856-1861. He was twice promoted first to corporal then to Sergeant he was Honorably Discharged in 1861. At the expiration of his term of service in 1861, he returned to his native county, and not long afterward married..." (Commemorative Biographical Record: Page 1040)
