Biography

Josephine Albano, daughter of Louis Albano and Francesca “Erza,” (actually, "Izzo") is born 17 March 1897 in Springfield, MA.[1]

In the 1900 federal census of Springfield, taken on the 12/13 of June, Louis Albano, 42 (b. 1857), heads a household on Union Street with his wife Francesca, 38 (b. 1862), and children Tony, 12 (b. 1888), Pasqualina, 10 (b. 1890), Annina, 7 (b. 1893), Josie, 3 (b. 1897), and Rosie, an infant (b. 1899). Louis was born in August 1857. Francesca was born in February 1862. They have been married for 14 years and have had six children, five still living. Tony was born in August 1888. Pasqualina in April 1890. Gaetano in December (actually, May) 1893. Josie in March 1897. And Rosie in October (actually, November) 1899. She is eight months old. Louis and his wife and 2 older children immigrated in 1890. No occupation has been entered for Louis or Francesca. The three oldest children are in school.[2]

In the 1910 federal census, taken 22 April, Louis Albano, 52 (b. 1857), heads a household on Union St. in Springfield (on the South End: I-91 now passes through the address) with his wife of 25 years, Francesca, 48 (b. 1862), and six children: Anthony, 23 (b. 1888), Pasqualina, 20 (b. 1890), Anna, 17 (b. 1893), Josephine, 14 (b. 1897), Rose, 12 (b. 1899), and Lowey (a daughter), 10 (b. 1900). Louis, his wife, and the two oldest children were born in Italy and immigrated in 1890, and the younger children were born in MA. According to her answers in this census, Francesca has had a total of 8 children, six of them living. Louis and Francesca are both laborers for a contractor. I can’t make out what Anthony or Anna do, but Anthony and Josephine both work in a general store, Josephine as a bookkeeper.[3]

Carlo Sarno, age 25, born 8 September 1892 in Castel San Giorgio, Italy, registers for the draft for WWI in Springfield, MA. He lives at 91 Union St in Springfield. He is a brickmason employed by Frank Masso in Indian Orchard, MA. He supports his wife and two sisters. The registrar describes Carlo as being of medium height and build with brown eyes and hair, on 5 June 1917. (This is about a week before Carlo Sarno marries Josephine Albano.)[4]

Carlo Sarno, 25, and Josephine Albano, 20, marry on 14 June 1917 in Springfield, MA. It is the first marriage for either of them. Carlo lives at 25 Union St. and Josephine at 28 Union St. Carlo is a Mason and Josephine is a driller. Carlo is the son of Generoso Sarno and Filomena Regcigna. Josephine is the daughter of Louis Albano and Francesca Izzo. They are married by the priest, Anthony Dalla Porta.[5]

Josephine and Carlo have eight known children: Lucia Filomena/Lucy (1919), Anna (1921), Genaro (1924), Carlo N. (1927), Evelyn (c. 1929), Beatrice (c. 1931), Joanna/Joanne/ (1935), and Dominic (c. 1938).

Lucia Filomena is born 10 April 1919. Her father is 28 (b. 1891) and was born in Italy. He is a laborer. Her mother is 23 (b. 1896) and was born in Springfield. They live at 99 Union.[6]

With the enactment of Prohibition, Josephine's sister, Pasqualina, and her husband, Carlo Siniscalchi, become prominent bootleggers in Springfield's Little Italy. Carlo is killed in 1921, and Pasqualina remarries to another gangster, Antonio Miranda, with whom she continues bootlegging. He dies in 1930, and Pasqualina is killed in 1932.
