Biography

Elizabeth Alben (1833-1914) was born in Liverpool, Lancashire on the 30th November 1833 and christened on the 12th January 1834 at Pitt Street Chapel (Wesleyan) in Liverpool. She was the daughter of William Alben and Elizabeth Cain. ^[1]
The family lived on Watkinson Street, Liverpool ^[2] but moved onto Park Street in Toxteth Park before 1851 when Elizabeth was a domestic servant. ^[3]

She married (for the first time) later that year. Her marriage to William Norman took place on the 28th September 1851 at St John (Old Haymarket), Liverpool when she gave an address of Oldham Street. ^{[4] [5]}
She would have 2 children with William before his death in 1854. Likely she went back to live at Park Street to her parent's address.

Her next marriage was on the 1st March 1858 at St John the Baptist, Toxteth Park to Joseph Frances, a widowed steward. At that time, she gave her address as Park Street. ^{[6] [7]} In 1861, she was shown as a married householder living on Bailey Street, Liverpool with one of her earlier children from her first marriage. Her widowed father and a sister were also living with her. No sign of her husband. ^[8] She did not appear to have any children with Joseph.

By 1864, she is once again shown widowed and married for a third time but she married under her previous surname of Norman (as if the second marriage never happened!). She married Mark Leishman Shannon, a block maker and the marriage took place on the 5th February 1864 at Our Lady and St Nicholas, Liverpool. ^{[9] [10]}

They lived on Upper Frederick Street in Liverpool for well over a decade and Elizabeth was a midwife. ^{[11] [12] [13]}

Her husband Mark died the following year in 1882. Elizabeth moved to Rimrose Road, Bootle before 1889 and continued offering her services as a midwife. ^[14] In 1891, as well as a granddaughter there, she had her younger brother and his family living with her. ^{[15] [16] [17]} She stayed at Rimrose Road until at least 1905 after which time, she moved to Beatrice Street, Bootle where she was shown as a housekeeper in the household of her nephew, Mark Alben. ^[18]

She died in the West Derby district (covering Bootle) in 1914. ^[19]
