Biography

He was the son of Albert Albertszen, the immigrant. He was a farmer in Flatlands and his name occurs on the records of the Dutch Reformed Church there as a member in 1677, and as a deacon in 1687, in which year he took the oath of allegiance as a native . In 1690 he obtained a tract of land at St. John's on the Delaware River. He was lieutenant of militia in 1691 and a captain in 1700. He married Annetjie Roelefse Schenck at Flatlands July 1, 1633. She died 1688 and on June 6, 1691 he married Margrietje Van Sicklen. His will was dated Feb 20, 1696. He died after 1731, he signed his name Jan Albertsen Ter Hunen. He had three children, Albert, Roelof, Aucke

Birth

No records have been found for Jan's birthdate, but early researchers speculated that he was the oldest son of Albert Albertszen.[1] More recent research, however, based on tax and marriage records, indicates Jan was the younger son, born about 1655-56.[2][3]

Land Transaction

Sold land in Flatlands to Annetje's brother Marten Roelof Schenck at Oct 1687 for 40 pounds. NY Deeds printed in Long Island Sources[4]

Death

Some earlier researchers have placed Jan's death about 1705, but tax and census records prove that he continued living in Flatlands for at least twenty-six more years. The error can be traced to the works of Teunis Bergen where he gave 1705 as a "supposed" date of death[5][6][3]

Burial

Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church Cemetery, Brooklyn, Kings County, New York[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jan by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jan:

What are we to make of the following, contradictory items presented above?

(1) "Some earlier researchers have placed Jan's death about 1705, but tax and census records prove that he continued living in Flatlands for at least twenty-six more years." He is thus said to have been living in 1731. (2 ) "Will dated 20 February 1696/97 John Albertse Terhuiennen of Flatlands. . . . Probate 9 Sep 1709.[11] Genealogical Gleanings from Book No. 2 of Conveyances, Brooklyn, Kings Co., N.Y.[12]" Neither of the cited sources of this man's will abstract (nos. 11 and 12) provides a probate date.

There is much disagreement in the literature concerning Jan and his brother, Albert. It is clear, however, that they were not twins. This profile shows Jan was born 13 Aug 1651, and his brother, Albert (https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Terhune-188) has the same birthdate of 13 Aug 1651.
This profile (like many WikiTree profiles of early ancestors) was created from Gedcoms contributed by multiple members. The contents were concatenatd and obvious duplication was removed, and some good information and sourcing has been contributed since the early days, but raw data (often internally inconsistent) remains from the early Gedcoms. The profile has been waiting for a member with knowledge and interest to correct the errors, add reliable sources for unsourced or poorly sourced content, etc.

After seeing your comments, I checked the New Amsterdam church record (readily available online) and confirmed that the brother named Albert is the one who was baptized (as a singleton) on 13 Aug 1651, so I changed the date displayed on this profile to match an estimated date in the profile text. (You also could do this sort of thing.) The text indicates that Jan was the oldest son -- it would be very helpful if someone would add an explanation of how this is known, with a citation to the source. And some discussion of the disagreement in the literature (also with source citations) would be in order.

Terhune-87 needs to be looked into. I don't have any data that would help at the moment.

Thanks, Melona!

Terhune-87 seems to be related to your entry. Brother's names are the same, father is the same, DOB totally off but should be closely looked at and may clear up some duplicate entries down the line.
Terhune-364 and Albertsz-12 appear to represent the same person because: This newly created duplicate can now be merged away into the prior established patronymic NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

Terhune-27 and Albertsz-12 appear to represent the same person because: This is the oldest maternal ancestor in this chain in need of a merge into the patronymic NNS PPP. No tree conflicts. Thanks! Merging into his patronymic as it first appears in records as he didn't use a surname until later, and not in a form known today.

Terhune-59 and Terhune-30 appear to represent the same person because: This is the same man, in need of merge. No tree conflicts. Thanks!

Terhuyne-8 and Terhune-27 appear to represent the same person because: I don't think there is really enough to support maintaining a separate sibling of the same same name with overlapping dates, so I am inclined to just merge these two extra matches into the established profile. Add aka Terhuyne. Thanks!
