Bluford West Alberty was born in 1829 at Hightower in the Cherokee Nation (now Georgia). He was the son of Moses Alberty, a white man and Sallie Wright a Cherokee. [1] Bluford was born shortly before his parents emigrated to Indian Territory, [2] and his mother died shortly after the family arrived in Indian Territory. He married Nancy Martin, also Cherokee, about 1847. Nancy was married twice before and she and her children are listed on the 1851 Drennan Roll, [3] while Bluford is listed on the 1851 "Old Settler" Roll living in the Saline District, Cherokee Nation. [4] Nancy and Bluford were the parents of a daughter, Beatrice, born about 1856. [5] Bluford served as a Captain in Company I of the Cherokee Mounted Rifles in the Civil War. [6] Nancy died in 1871 and Bluford married another Cherokee woman, Eliza Bushyhead. They were the parents of two children, Pixie (died in infancy) and Margaret. The 1883 Cherokee census lists Bluford, Eliza, and Maggie living in the Tahlequah District. [7] He passed away in 1889 and is buried in the Tahlequah Cemetery, Cherokee County, Oklahoma. [8]
Witness
Bluford testified in 1898 when Mary Ann Odell (Pybern) (Roberts) Odell-4637 claimed that her children were Cherokee through a great grandmother named Sarah Chisholm (Tinsley). His testimony was found and purchased from the Texas State Archives by Tucker-19506. He stated:
I am a resident of Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation. I met Dave and William Chisholm near Belview Texas and they lived there on the ? and I was introduced to them as living Cherokee's by George Harnage and all by Willan Hanage that is I know about them said they were kin of old Tom Chisholm of the Cherokee Nation. Hornage told me they were relatives of old Tom Chisholm. That was the year of 1852 or 53. I would judge Dave Chisholm to be about 45 years old and William I think was the younger of the two.
How was he known to the Roberts family? His first cousin Thomas Agustus Treece (1833-1880) was married to Elizabeth Jane Brown (1844-1917), the great niece of Eli Roberts Roberts-53621, through his sister Nancy Roberts (Scott), through her daughter Joanna Scott, who was Elizabeth Jane Brown's mother.
Research Notes
Some list his death date as 1891, but he does not appear on the 1890 Cherokee census, so the 1889 date must be correct.
Daughter Margaret died before 1896; she does not appear on the Old Settler payroll as an heir of her father.
Daughter Beatrice Markham died in 1897.

Two Bluford West Alberty's did, Stilwell and Westville , Oklahoma, are right on the Arkansas border, but none of the ones I have are showing born in Arkansas.
Alberty, Bluford West 17 February 1853 - Westville, Adair, Oklahoma, USA 30 January 1935 - Westville, Adair, Oklahoma, USA
Alberty, Bluford West Alberty-183 10 Aug 1829 - Flat Rock, Surry, North Carolina, USA 16 Nov 1889 - Tahlequah, Cherokee, Oklahoma, USA
Alberty, Bluford West Jr 1 March 1892 - Westville, Adair County, Oklahoma, United States of America 30 April 1918 - Westville, Adair County, Oklahoma, United States of America
Pretty sure Bluford was born in the Western Cherokee Nation (now Arkansas). His family signed up to emigrate in 1828. He wasn't born in North Carolina for sure, his family lived at Hightower which is now in Georgia.
