At the age of 18 or 20, George left Germany. He and his brother snuck into a cattle boat as stowaways. After a few days, they got hungry, and came up on deck. They were allowed to work for their passage. The Scottish captain was good to them. They were on the water for a month or more and then arrived at New York. Here George and his brother were separated and he never heard from him again.
George made his way to Ontario where he helped cut sown trees and clear the land. He may have come to Ellice Township where he cleared land in the blueberry swamp.
George married Elizabeth Bauer in 1854 and haad one son Christ B. Albrecht. Elizabeth died within a year and then he married Maria Hammer. They had 9 children.
In addition to being a good story teller, George loved to sing and play the mouth organ.
He was a very tall man with bright blue eyes. He smoked a pipe.
It is believed that George Albrecht and Maria Hammer were Lutheran. How they became Amish Mennonite is not known; but it is probably because they lived in an Amish Mennonite community and started going to church there. According to early census records, Maria Hammer worked in the home of Lichtis who were Amish Mennonites.
George was known to sing a prayer each morning and loved to hear the scriptures read.
