Biography

• Reksten says Hans Jacob ALBRECHT was born in Berwangen in the Kraichgau from which so many Germans came to America in the early 1700s. The name Albrecht appears as both German and Swiss [Zürich] – the Kraichgau in the late 1600s had both, including Swiss Anabaptists of the name. • Jacob must have immigrated before 1747 when he witnessed a will in Allemängle on the border of Berks and Lehigh counties.. • If he is the Jacob ALBRECHT baptized in Berwangen 25 Jul 1686, then his father was Nicolaus and mother Christina STIER. • However, a Jacob ALBRECHT immigrated 11 Aug 1732 on the Samuel under master Hugh Percy from Rotterdam/Cowes, recorded by the captain as being age 37 = b. 1695, with wife Magdalena 35 = b. 1697, and the ages of the children immigrating with the 1732 immigrant of this name suggest this 1732 immigrant was indeed b. abt 1695. So the 1686 record from the Berwangen church record may be another individual of same name. • The 1732 immigrant Jacob signed with a + mark. Children with them were Michiel ALBRETH 13 = b. 1719, Eva ALBRETHIN 9 = b. 1723, Maria ALBRETHIN and Christina ALBRETHIN 3 [twins] = b. 1729. These children have all been assigned to the Jacob ALBRECHT of Lehigh Co PA, although their estimated years of birth don't fit what is given by Reksten. Note: The argument for an arrival with a relative WETZSTEIN supports the 1712 marriage and a birth date of 1685 for Jacob. • Another Jacob ALBRECHT age 41 arrived at Philadelphia 9 yrs later on the St. Andrew on 2 Oct 1741; this captain gave only the names and ages of the adult men. • Jacob ALBRECHT lived near the county line between Berks and Lehigh. When he arrived, it was all part of Philadelphia County. • Jacob was neighbor to Philip Jacob PROBST & witness to PROBST's 1747 will (Jacob signed it in German script), but Jacob died before its 1760 probate. See Northampton County Orphans Court records abstracted by C.E. Anderson. • Being near to Philip Jacob PROBST, whose house still stands at 48 Old Philadelphia Pike in Kistler Valley in Albany Tp, means Jacob ALBRECHT must have lived in Lynn Tp rather than with other ALBRECHTs down in Macungie Tp. He also does not show in the Berks Co estate records. • Some of the ALBRECHTS in this area were Moravian, and there was an Allemängel Moravian congregation, according to Susan Schlack, a Moravian genealogist in 2002. • Evidently he is related to the later Jacob ALBRECHT who started evangelical preaching and the church that became the Evangelical United Brethren.

Cleaning up the entry for Albrecht-153 [HJA]: Whether Hans Jacob really had 3 wives and a mother with an English name, Folsom: This is how Hans Jacob ALBRECHT-153 showed on WikiTree in April 2017: Hans Jacob Albrecht aka Albright Born 25 Jul 1686 in Berwangen, Baden-Wuerttemberg Son of Hendrich [sic] Albrecht and Anna Elizabeth (Folsom) [sic] Albrecht 1 - Husband of Maria Catharina Albrecht — married [marriage date?] [marriage location?] [sic] 2 - Husband of Anna Magdalena Wetzstein — married 8 Feb 1712 in Berwangen, Kraichgau, Baden-Württemberg, Germany 3 - Husband of Magdalena (Brobst) Albrecht — married 1719 in Hessen [sic]

Questionable parents: Could HJA's mother be named FOLSOM - that's an English name, yet the boy was supposedly born in Germany. Did this come from a reliable source? I did check the lists of 1709 Palatine immigrants from London to NY State, to see if he'd picked up a wife in England and come to America with her, but he's not on any of those immigrant lists. There is a James ALBRECHT and wife on the first Board of Trades list in London May 1709, but no child is given for them as there is for other couples. It's more likely he came later and landed at Philadelphia, a man of this name having arrived 1732 with another passenger named WETTSTEIN (possibly related to HJA's wife WETZSTEIN). From the church book showing the 1712 marriage of Hans Jacob ALBRECHT to a Magdalena WETZSTEIN in Berwangen, Baden, we also have the parents of the couple, so the FOLSOM mother and her husband have been removed (as of May 2017).

Questionable wives:

(a) The third wife originally listed for HJA with a marriage in 1719 in Hessen was a Magdalena BROBST - no further details or sources. Children given as born in Hessen or in Virginia must belong to this woman and a Hans Jacob ALBRECHT unconnected to Pennsylvania. Her husband may be the correct son of the Hendrich ALBRECHT and wife FOLSOM given as parents. All connected to Virginia and Hessen have been removed from Albrecht-153 (as of May 2017).

Jacob ALBRECHT and his wife Magdalena WETZSTEIN: A couple with those names m. 8/9 Feb 1712 in Berwangen in the Kraichgau in Baden (from LDS online). Both wives WETZSTEIN and BROBST showed the name Magdalena and could be the one who immigrated with him at Philadelphia in 1732. WETZSTEIN has been accepted as the only one because of the known 1712 marriage in Berwangen and the other family of that name arriving on the same immigrant ship. — The children have been tentatively assigned to HJA and Magdalena WETZSTEIN.
