Biography

The surname is found spelled Albright and Allbright. Cleveland Albright used both spellings and also the nickname Cleve. This was the name he used on his Social Security Application in 1937. [1] He was named for President of the United States Grover Cleveland whose first term in office ended in 1889 the year Cleve Albright was born.

The story of Cleve's early life and childhood is very sad. The family were apparently left in destitute circumstances by the death of the father, George Albright, prior to 1900. While a record of the death has not been found we know from the 1900 Cabell County, West Virginia that the family were living in what was called the county infirmary but which is another name for "poor house". Members of the family were: Pantha Albright (age 50), Margie Albright (age 17), Cleveland Albright (age 15) and Lewis Albright (age 11). [2]

In the 1910 census he was working as a laborer at odd jobs and resided in the Barboursville district of Cabell County, West Virginia with a female named "X" Albright, age 70, born West Virginia, a widow and described as Cleveland's "mother". This of course would be "Panthea" Albright whose name the census taker probably was unsure how to spell.[3]

At age 23 he married Maud Ross who was age 22 in Cabell County, West Virginia on 31 Oct 1911. The marriage was performed by O.L. Akers.[4] They apparently had no children.

The World War I Draft Registration Card for Cleveland Allbright dated 12 September 1918 provides a bit of information his life. He was 34 years old and born on December 29, 1884. His residence was 120 24th St, Huntington, Cabell County, WV. and he worked as a Laborer for American Car & Fdy Co. in Huntington. Mrs Margie Adkins was his nearest relative. The Registers Report describes Cleve as of medium height and build with gray eyes and dark brown hair. [5]

By 1920 Cleveland was a widower and was working in Huntington, West Virginia as a concrete worker for a cement company. The census shows he lived on Fourth Street and was head of a household that included his sister, Margie Adkins, as well as two nieces, Edith Davis and May Albright, a nephew Elmer Albright and a boarder, William Rabourn who was a laborer at a furniture factory.[6]

He died at age 68 years, 7 month, 24 days on 22 Feb 1952 in Cabell County, West Virginia. His parents were listed as George Albright and Panthea Elkins. [7]
