Biography

John Albury was born about 1781 in Harbour Island, Bahamas to John Albury and Mercy Roberts Albury.

He m1 on 11 Mar 1798 at Harbour Island, Eleuthera Sarah Curry ~1780~1802. They had 2 ch born at Harbour Island : Benjamin Albury b 15 Jul 1798 and Margaret Albury b 1 Feb 1801

He was mentioned in the 1841 will of Richard Curry, his stepfather, of Green Turtle Cay, Abaco: ".. that one-third be equally divided amongst my above-named children, and also, the children of my aforesaid loving wife Mercy of her body lawfully begotten by a former Husband, namely Sarah Lowe, Mary Lowe, and John Albury or their issue.."

John "Old John" Albury was married twice: first, to Sarah Curry, 11 March 1798, at Harbour Island; and second, about 1803, to Sarah Saunders. John and his first wife were the parents of Benjamin and Robert Albury.

John Albury and w2 Sarah Saunders Albury had children - among them John Albury, Sarah Curry Albury, William Albury, Margaret "Peggy" Albury, Jane Ann Albury, Henry Albury, and Richard Albury. All of the children listed above appeared in the will he wrote in 1838.

John Albury moved to Hope Town, Abaco after the devastating 1806 hurricane destroyed dozens of structures on Harbour Island.

John was a slave owner and registered 11 slaves in the 1831 Bahamas Slave Registration.

John "Old John" Albury wrote a will in 1838 that was proved in 1854. It is not exactly clear when he passed away.

DNA

Maternal relationship is confirmed by a triangulated group on GEDmatch who share a 19.9 cM segment on chromosome 15, consisting of Chris Roberts, GEDmatch kit # A141663, and Paul Pengelly, his 4th cousin 1x removed, GEDmatch kit # YV1829469, and Linda (Lowe) Cole, his 5th cousin 1x removed, GEDmatch kit # ZH2617760. (Paul and Linda are 6th cousins.) Their most-recent common ancestor is Mercy Roberts, the 4x great grandmother of Chris Roberts and 5x great grandmother of both Paul Pengelly and Linda (Lowe) Cole.
