Biography

William Alonzo Albury was born May 20, 1904.[1] As there were a few William A. Albury's in this chain, close family always refered to him as Capt. Many others called him Capt. Bill.[2]

“Grandpa Albury used to tell us his family lived on Hog Island across the harbor from Nassau. They couldn't keep calling it Hog Island after the casinos bought property and started building so they re-named it Paradise Island. He and his brothers used to sail across the harbor to get to school each morning. ” — email from Frederick Albury to Peter Roberts 28 Jul 2018.[3]

William and his father W.C.B. Albury started a daily fishing excursion from the Miami Marina abt 1929 or so. After a bad freeze one year they remodeled the boats and started sightseeing around the upper Bay, Star Island, etc. At one time the Albury Motorboat Line had 5 boats with different captains. One going up the Miami River to the Musa Indian Vilage, 2 Glass bottom boats, one in the bay and one for outside the breakwater, and two sightseeing boats. The Island Queen was low to the water and could go under the low bridges and the SevenSeas Dreamboat, a three deck 300 passenger Dinner and Dance cruise boat with live bands and galley to make the dinners. By 1952 he had sold all the boats and got out of what he said had become " a very cut throat business." [4]

William and to the best of my knowledge Norma were both lifelong teetotalers. They never had alcohol in their home or at parties or events. I don't know if this stems from their very strong Baptist beliefs (They were both very active in their Church) or maybe growing up during Prohibition and seeing it's affects on some family members. Remembrances of grandson Fred Albury.

Obit- William A. Albury, 81, 420 7th Ave., Indialantic, died Thursday. Born in Nassau, Bahamas, he moved to Indialantic from Miami in 1958. He was a boat owner and operator and a Baptist. One of Gpa's stories was he and some boys and brothers were hanging around the docks one day and some men filming a movie asked them to swim back and forth as fast as they could in front of the dock while they filmed it. This must have been the 1916 production of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea filmed on New Providence Is.. So for months they told all their family and friends they were in a big Hollywood movie. Gpa said later when they got to see the film they realised they wern't in the film at all, only their wake was filmed and used as the wake for the very fake looking squid in the film.
