Biography

Gertrude Hazel (Alcock) Burrow was born September 10, 1924, at the home of her parents, rural Tripoli, Iowa. She died at Allen Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa, on February 27, 2002, at the age of 77 due to complications following heart surgery. She was the daughter of Leigh Everett Alcock and Effie Grace (Gillett) Alcock. At the age of four, she attended kindergarten at the Douglas #5 rural school near her home in Bremer County. She was baptized and joined the Frederika Methodist Church in 1935. she was a member of that church for 54 years until she moved to Waverly in 1989, when she transferred her membership to Trinity United Methodist Church. She attended rural school until she graduated in 1941 at the age of 16. After graduating she attended Luther College in Decorah for one year. Following this she worked in Waterloo at Rath Packing Company until her marriage to William Myron Burrow on April 30, 1944. They farmed in the Frederika area for 45 years before moving to an acreage in the Waverly area in 1989. They were the parents of 7 children, Clinton (married to Laura Hurmence), Minneapolis, MN; Vicky (married to Gaylord Converse, rural Sumner; Jim (married to Betty Roe), Raleigh, NC; Nancy (married to Paul Magnall), Waverly; Jerry (married to Adarienne Arthur), Waverly; Mary jo (married to David Carlson), Burnsville, MN; and Ken (married to Beth Imes), Waverly. She is survived by her husband, her children and their spouses, 20 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, one brother, Leland Alcock, Waverly, one sister, Gloria Weber, Albuquerque, NM; and by her German exchange son, Dr. Karl Goebel and family of Altdorf, Germany.

Hazel was active in the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for many years. She was a 4-H leader and involved in Farm Bureau work and other volunteer organizations. she and her husband were volunteers at the Heifer Project International Ranch at Perryville, Arkansas, as host couple several times. Her latest involvement was a volunteer for hospice in Bremer County.

She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening and especially was happy working with and caring for younger children and senior citizens. She was always as avid partipant and fan of sports.

Hazel chose to donate her body to Mayo Medical School for medical research. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 3, 2002, at Trinity United methodist church, Waverly.
