Biography

Mary (Alcock) Twisden immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Mary Alcock born about 1632, was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Alcock. Her father was of Maine as early as 1639, when his name is recorded in a deed. [1] [2] Mary deposed in 1673, that she was then aged about 41 years. [3]

She married Peter Twisden of York, Maine. Peter was baptized on March 28, 1623/4 at Frittenden, son of John and Susanna (Stupell) Twisden who were originally of Denton Court, Co. Kent, England. Peter came with his parents to New England, they were first of Scituate , Massachusetts by August, 1638. and later of York, Maine. [1]

Mary is listed as daughter, Mary Twisden in Administration of her father John's will was granted on July 6, 1675. Her husband John sic Twisden in named in the division. [2]

  • 1662: April: Peter Twisden, fisherman of the Isle of Shoals, bought 3 acres of meadow at York, from Robert Edge. [4]
  • 1673: July 10: Mary Twisden aged about 41 years and Peter Twisden, aged about 45 years, both gave depositions regarding the last statements made by Joseph Backer and debts owed to Edward Beale. Backer who had previously gone to sea with Peter was on his deathbed in the Twisden house. [3]
  • 1695/6: Nicholas Gowen, alias Smith, brought a claim against Sarah Chadbourn, for 'cutting and carrying away' a load of hay from the widow Mary Twisden's marsh at York. [5]
  • 1697: June 30: Mary Twisden, widow and relict of Peter Twisden, fisherman of the Island of Shoals, sold 3 acres of marshland on the York River to Samuel Small. [6]

It is unknown when her husband Peter died. He is listed in several court documents, the latest found being dated November 24 1684, when Peter Twisden was on of the men taking the inventory of the estate of Edward Holland. [3]

Mary Twisden spent her final years in Gloucester, boarding the last eleven months with the family of John Harraden. [7]

She died there on June 11 or 12, 1698. [8] [9]

Mary died intestate and John Harraden was appointed administrator and submitted her inventory to the Salem Court. [9]
