His death was reported in the Thursday, 17 February 1842 edition of the Grahamstown Journal:[2]

DIED at Uitenhage on 28 January 1842, Cornelius Botton ALCOCK Esq., aged 62 years, late a Lieutenant in the 60th Regt. of Foot.
According to the Death Notice, completed by his step-son, he and Frances had been separated by law by the Sheriff. It also includes another 'natural' child:[3][4]
