Biography

Richard was born in 1854, registered in the East Retford district in the June quarter. He gives his birthplace in censuses as Retford [1]

In 1861 Richard, a scholar aged 7, was living with his parents Richard a Journeyman cabinet maker and Emma at No 3 Court Bridge St, Worksop, Nottinghamshire and his sister Mary Ann (1). In the house was a boarder George Hayward (21, Joiner Journeyman, born Rufford, Nottinghamshire) [2].

In 1871 Richard aged 17 was an apprentice cabinet maker living with his parents Richard (41, a journeman Cabinet Maker, born Gainsborough, Lincolnshire) and mother Emma (41, born Gunthorpe, Lincolnshire) and siblings Mary A (11), Charles H (5) and Emma C (2) - all the younger children were born in Worksop [3].

In 1881 Richard was visiting his future wife, Mary Robinson Lawson, and her parents Thomas Lawson (60, a wheelwright born Farndon, Lincolnshire) and Elizabeth Lawson (60, born Claypole Lincolnshire), and future brother-in-law William Lawson (25, a Joiner, born Farndon) in Coddington, Nottinghamshire [4].

Richard married Mary Robinson Lawson in the Newark Registration district in the December quarter of 1881 [5].

In 1891 Richard 37, a Forman Joiner, his wife Mary N (37 born Faindon), their children Thomas G (7, a scholar) and Charles 2 (3) and daughter Mary M (8, a scholar) and his widowed mother in law Elizabeth Lawson (born Claypole Linclnshire, aged 73) were living at Hardwick, Clumber [6].

In 1901 Richard a Joiner aged 46 was living with his wife Mary (47), and children Mary M (18, a dressmaker), Thomas G (17, a joiner), Charles W (13, a Joiner's apprentice) and Richard (5) at Hardwick, Clumber, where all the children had been born [7].

In 1911 Richard George aged 57 was living at the Post Office, Hardwick, Clumber, with his wife Mary Robinson (Lawson) Alcock (1854-1940) 57, born Farms in, Notts), and their sons Charles William (aged 23, a joiner) and Richard (aged 15, described as a "student for clerk service") [8].

Richard died on 27 April 1918 in Hardwick, Worksop, Notthinghamshire, attended by his daughter Mary May. He is described as a Foreman Joiner on Estate. He died of cardiac degeneration and auricular fibrulation [9]. In probate, place of death is Hardwick, and his trade is Estate Carpenter, principle beneficiary was his wife. His estate was worth £413-0-8 [10].
