Nicholas was born on the 31st October 1818, and baptised on the 22 November 1818.
In 1841 Nicholas, aged 20-25, was living with his parents and siblings Elizabeth (15), Henry (15), Mary (8), Isabella (4), William (3) and Eliza Smith (15, presumably a servant or friend of the family) at Lea Terrace, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire [1].
In 1851 Nicholas, aged 32 was an unmarried master cooper, employing one man, living with his parents and siblings Richard, Isabella and William in Lea Terrace, Lea Road, Gainsborough, Lincolnshire [2].
Nicholas' married Jane Cappiter, aged 29, daughter of William Cappiter on 25th May 1857 at Holy Trinity, Hull [3]. Their marriage was registered in the Hull District of Yorkshire in the June quarter of 1857 [4].
In 1861 Nicholas, an assistant cooper, was living as a boarder in Hull. Head of the household was Ann Bulmer (76 born Louth, Lincolnshire), and her daughter Priscilla Bulmer (36, dressmaker born Hull), other boarders were James Stephenson (28, ship's joiner) and Henry Bradley (25, grocer's sister) [5].
Their son, Richard Henry, was baptised at
St. Paul's, Sculcoates, York, England on 8th December 1868[6]
In 1871, aged 58, Nicholas, a cooper, was living in Kilburn's Bldg, East Sculcoates, Yorkshire with his wife, Jane (aged 42, born Bawtry, Lincolnshire, and their children Henry (12, born Gainsby Lincolnshire and Richard (9, born Boston Lincolnshire) [7].
In 1881 Nicholas was a widower,, living in Sculcoates workhouse [8].
Nicholas' death was registered at Sculcoates in the September quarter of 1881 [9]

In 1881 Henry (23, born Gainsborough) and Richard (19, born Boston) were lodgers in the household of Sarah Boston (61, born Warmsworth, Yorkshire). Both men were general labourers [10].
