In Belstead Churchyard, the oldest monument is a large flat slab lying on the ground to the S.E. of the church. Inscribed as follows: " Here rest the bodies of John Alderman who departed this life April the 15th 1649 and of Susan his wife who departed this life November 3D 1671 which persons had issue 7 sons and 6 daughters. These parents were and are not ye see not long but we who are shall not bee."
The arms used by the Alderman family were: Six eagles displayed three, two and one, a canton. Crest; An eagle displayed.
