Biography

William Alderman was born June 25, 1838, in Thomas County, Georgia to James and Roxie Ann (Holloway) Alderman. He moved with his parents to Hillsborough County in about 1850, and settled in the Alafia River area. In 1860, Mary Ann Moody, daughter of Benjamin and Nancy Moody, married William but she died shortly afterward and there were no children. William then moved to Manatee County and he married in 1863 Martha Jane Hollingsworth. They had eight children: David, Robert, Thomas, William, Jr. John, Burgess, Joseph, and Christine.

William became a wealthy cattleman in Manatee County. During the Civil War, William was a member of Capt. John T. Lesley's Company B, Florida, Special Cavalry, CSA But, he was a Union sympathizer and provided cattle and deer to the Union garrison at Fort Myers,

For many years, William and his family resided at Fort Ogden. Prior to 1877, they moved to Pine Level where he open a ten room hotel. He also planted extensive orange groves and continued his cattle operation. Around 1880, he moved his family to the Basinger area for a short period of time, but then returned to Pine Level. But in 1888, he permanently moved his family back to Bassinger, settling on the east side of the Kissimmee River. During this period of time, during the 1880's, he and his wife, Martha Jane, had divorced. William then married Mary Thomas and they had three children, Elin, Beulah, and James. William died at Basinger on January 30, 1893.

William Alderman was known for being a wealthy cattleman in Manatee County, Florida. He planted extensive orange groves , was a business owner of a ten room hotel and provided cattle and deer to the Union Army.
