He served with the 2/18th Battalion in WW2 sailing on the Batavia for Singapore. He was reported missing 16.2.1942 [1] at the Fall of Singapore. On 11.1.1943 [2], [3] he was confirmed as a Japanese POW and was imprisoned in Changi, Singapore. [4], [5], [6], [7], [8]. Later he was forced to work on the Sumatra Railway, where 500- 600 were believed to have died [9]. He was evacuated from Pakan Baroe Camp to Singapore before returning to Australia. survived the experience and was transported back to Australia on the Manunda on 27.10.1945 . However he continued to suffer from Malaria, Beri Beri and Enteritis and on 4.1.1946 he was discharge. His 1960 death in Concord Repatriation Hospital was attributed to his treatment as a POW in Changi and on the Sumatra Railway.
