Biography

Amelia Mariah Aldrich was born July 28,1827, in Broome County, New York, to parents Charles Aldrich and Catherine Aldrich.

  • 1830 U.S. Census: Amelia Aldrich lived in Chenango, Broome County, New York, with one male 5-10, two males 10-15, one male 40-50 (father, Charles), two females under 5 (Amelia Mariah, age 3, and ?), one female 10-15, two females 15-20, one female 40-50 (Catherine, 43). The Aldriches held no slaves. There were 10 members in the household.[1]
  • 1840 U.S. Census: Amelia Aldrich lived in Plymouth, Chenango, New York with brother, Zulema, head of household, and two males 15-20, two males 20-30 (Zulema, and ?), one female under 5, one female 10-15 (Amelia Mariah, 13), one female 20-30 (presumably, Zulema's wife), and one female 50-60 (mother Catherine, 53). Zulema held no slaves. Total number in household was 8; two persons engaged in agriculture[2]
  • 1855 New York State Census: Amelia Aldrich, 27, lived in E. D. 1, Chenango, Broome County, New York with her mother, Catherine Randall, recorded as 87, but looks like 67 on film, and her daughter Frances, 6. Catherine was head of household, born in Albany, New York; Amelia & Frances born in Broome County. Catherine was widowed & had lived in Broome County 43 years.[3]
  • 1865 New York State Census: Amelia M. Pierce, 38, lived in District 1, Colesville, Broome County, New York with husband Silas G., 47, and her daughter Frances Aldrich, 16, named on census as Pierce, and children with Silas: Josephine, 8, Fred, 6, and Grant, 10 months. Also present was Amelia's mother Catherine Randall, 76. All members of the family were born in Broome County except Silas, born in Greene, and Catherine born in Columbia. Silas stated he had one child, this was his 2nd marriage; Amelia stated she had 4 children, this was her first marriage. Confusing. Catherine stated she had 13 children, married twice, widowed. Silas's occupation was farmer mechanic, he is the only voter in the household, & he owned his own land[4].
  • 1870 U. S. Census: Maria (sic), 42, lived in Mullica, Atlantic County, New Jersey with husband Silas, 54, and children Josephine, 13, Frederick, 11, and Mark, 4. Silas' occupation was shoemaker, real estate valued at $1600, personal property valued at $500. All members of the family born in New York. [5]
  • 1871 New York Land Records: On January 6, 1871 Amelia Pierce granted to Charles Seaw property on Colesville, in Broome County, New York.[6]
  • 1876: Son Fred Pierce died on October 9, 1876, age 17, in Elwood, Atlantic County, New Jersey[7]
  • 1880 U. S. Census: Maria (sic), 53, lived in Binghamton, Broome County, New York with husband Silas G., 62, and son Mark, 14. Silas' occupation was farmhand, he and both of his parents were born in New York. Maria was keeping house, Mark was at school. Maria's parents both born in New York.[8]
  • 1885 Husband Silas Pierce died.
  • 1892 New York State Census: Maria Pierce, age 64, lived alone in Binghamton, Broome County, New York and worked as a nurse.[9]
  • 1892: Maria Pierce, age 64, died May 19, 1892 and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Port Dickinson, Broome County, New York. Find A Grave: Memorial #67511041 [10]
