Sarah Aldridge was born about 1784 in Fairfax County, Virginia. She was the daughter of James Aldridge and Alsey Jacobs. By 1802 James Aldridge had moved his family to Caswell County, North Carolina after living for about a year in Orange County, North Carolina. In 1807 James Aldridge passed away and in 1809 his lands were divided and allotted to his seven living children.[1][2] Sarah received 49.5 acres in Orange County, North Carolina on the waters of Jordan's Creek.[3] This was a part of the 150-acre property that her father had purchased in 1801 from Andrew McClary. Records indicate that Sarah gave birth to a child in 1809.[4][5] No further records were found on the child.
On 18 July 1816, Sarah married Joshua Butler in Caswell County, with Jacob Ahart signing as bondman.[6]
In 1820, Joshua and Sarah were living in Orange County, North Carolina, most likely on the land Sarah had inherited.[7] On 6 October 1822, Joshua and Sarah sold their Orange County property jointly with Elizabeth Aldridge, Sarah's sister. The deed transaction was for 107 acres, which was sold to Dixon Corn for $500. This deed wasn't recorded until 1855 in Alamance County.[8]
By 1823, Joshua and Sarah had moved to Morgan County, Georgia. In 1828 they again moved, this time to Campbell County, Georgia to live on 202.5 acres of land Joshua had drawn in the 1827 Georgia Land Lottery. Joshua and Sarah had at least seven children together: Mary, Delana, John Calvin, Nancy, Frances, Sarah Jane, and James.
In the 1830, 1840, and 1850 US Census, they were living in Campbell County, Georgia.[9][10][11]
Joshua passed away in 1855 in Fulton County, Georgia. Fulton County had just formed in 1853 from the western half of DeKalb County, which was where their two youngest children were married in 1851, Sarah Jane in March and James in October.
In the 1860 US Census, Sarah was living with her daughter Frances Butler Smith's family in Fayette County, Georgia.[12]
Sarah's City of Atlanta property on Peters Street. |
In 1862, as a resident of Fayette County, Sarah sold her City of Atlanta property (see the map to the right), described as Block 21, Lot no. 4, fronting Peters Street [13] at the intersection with Thompson Street. She had purchased this property from the estate of her late husband. Less than two years later, most of Atanta was burned by Union Troops during the American Civil War. Today, this section of Peters Street is renamed Trinity Avenue and the property is Fire Station No. 5 Park with a parking lot. The sale of this property is the last known record for Sarah. In the 1870 US Census, she was not shown with any of her children. Her exact date of death and place of burial are unknown.
