The son of Colonel Harvey Alexander retired He served in the pre-dreadnought H.M.S Britannia from September 1912 to 5 May 1915. He then served on Ostrich and the Acorn Class destroyer Comet until January 1917 being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 30 August 1916. On 1 March 1917 he went to Dolphin for instruction in submarines a and on 2 June was appointed to the H,M,S, J 5 and possibly served in her until 1921 and could have been temporary in command ending on 25 March 1917
He was then promoted to Lieutenant-Commander on the 30 August 1924 On 25 April 1927 he was at Haslar Hospital with chronic appendicitis but was declared fit two days later and was sent back on 4 May , it was decided he needed seven weeks, In December 1928 he was not recommended in an evaluation perhaps penned by Rear - Admiral Henty.E.Grace.
Alexander was placed on the Retired List at his own request with the rank of Commander on 15 January 1939
He was mentioned in despatches for distinguished service in Malaya in 1942. He was captured by the Japanese and eventually liberated. He reverted to the Retired List on 22 June 1946
