Biography

Aaron was born in 1710, prob in Cecil Co., Maryland. His movements can be traced through land records. He was in Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania by 1748 and in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina by 1763 settling in the north eastern part of the county in the area around the Poplar Tent Church. He passed away after 1771.

Fifteen day of November 1771
In the name of God Amen. I Aaron Alexander of North Carolina Mecklenburgh County, farmer, being in perfect health and memory, thanks be givem to God, therefore calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say, principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hand of almighty god that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a dessent manner at the direction of my executors, and as touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased god to give me- I give and devise and dispose of thesame in the following manner and form.
Imprimis, I give to and bequeath to my son David Alexander five shillings sterling money of Great Britain.
Item. I give to and alow my well beloved wife Mary her full thirds of my moveable estate.
Item. I give to my son Aaron Alexander all my real estate and I order my son Aaron Alexander to pay my son John Brown Alexander twenty pounds current money of Pennsylvania when he is of age and if Aaron dies uder age, or without heirs then John is to be the heir.
I do hereby constitute make and ordain my trusty friends Zaccheus Wilson senior, and William Alexander my brother my executor to this my last will and testament and I denie all wills and testaments before the date of this above & declare this to be my last will and testament - in witness whereof I have hearunto set my hand and seal, the day and year above written.

Pa, part of a tract called new Munster, which did formerly belong to David Alexander of Cecil Co. Md. One of the witnesses to this deed was Zebulon Alexander

"and now conveyed to John Alexander by Aaron Alexander being the righteous heir at law of the said David Alexander". Made 15 Nov 1749 Wit: Zebulon Alexander, Sam'l Steel. Ackn. 28 Nov 1749 by James Alexander attorney for Aaron Alexander. JPs: R'd Thompson, Tim o Roberts. Rec 29 Nov 1749 M. Bordley, Clerk. (This is the land deed which connects Aaron as son and heir of David of New Munster. Aaron at this time is living in Lancaster Co. Pa. The John is probably a cousin. James, his attorney is the son of Joseph. I believe Zebulon is a son of his uncle Moses.)(This is the land that Susannah the widow of John sold later.)

Pa. farmer because he is moving appoints his well beloved and trusty friend James Alexander of Cecil Co. to acknowledge a deed to John Alexander. Made 15 Nov 1749. Wit: Zebulon Alexander, Sam'l Steel. Ackn: 28 Nov 1749 Rec. 29 Nov. 1749. (This is when Aaron and is brothers are preparing to move to Mecklenburg NC.)

- J.S.10:124 Aaron sold land willed to him by his father David To John Alexander of Chester Pa. Aaron of Petersburg Twp., Cumberland Co., Pa.1751, farmer, appoints friend Moses of Milford H(undre)d, farmer, to sell part of "New Munster" (was father David's)
- Dec. 11 1751, Aaron Alexander of Township of Petersburgh, Cumberland Co, deeded William Longwill merchant of Cecil Co. a tract in New Munster which came from his father, David Alexander, who bought it from Thomas Stevenson. This deed was signed by Aaron and Ann his wife. Andrew Alexander and Thomas Reese were the witnesses. (Cec 7-271) On the same date Aaron constituted Moses Alexander of Milford Hundred, Cecil Co. Md, his attorney for the completion of this sale. (Cec 7-270).
- Susannah. of Chester Co., Pa, widow, wife of David (Alexander) sells land sold by Stevenson in Milford H(undre)d to David in 1718 and sold by Aaron, son and heirs of David to John Alexander 1749 willed to Susannah 1762/1765 "New Munster" (J.S 10:124 & J.S.10:147 Cecil Co MD land Deeds

Aaron was doubtless selling his land at this time preparatory to removing to NC, for he is found there in the early sixties

  • Aaron bought land on Coddle Creek and English Buffalo Creek from Gov. Arthur and Justina Dobbs; deed dated Dec 22 1763 (1-642); witnessed by Nathaniel Alexander and Martha Pfifer. (Thia area was Mecklenburg Co. at the time, but Cabarrus Co. after 1792)
  • (from Alexander notebooks) Poplar Tent congregation was taken from the Rocky River Presbyterian Church, probably organized about 1764-65. Aaron and Nathaniel Alexander were Elders of Rocky River church and when Poplar Tent was organized they became Elders of this Poplar Tent congregation. which was about 7 miles from Concord, now Cabarrus Co. on the road from Concord to Beatties Ford.
  • portions taken from the HISTORICAL SKETCH OF POPLAR TENT CHURCH[2] by Wm. S. Harris, Ruling Elder of said Church, read before Concord Presbytery, April 22nd, 1872:
-(pg 10) "The first settlement was made in Poplar Tent in 1732, on the plantation east of the church . . . . From 1732 to 1751, the present bounds of Poplar Tent were sparsely settled by Scotch-Irish immigrants from Pennsylvania and Cecil county, Maryland. The first settlers were Clark, for whom Clark's Creek was called, Aaron Alexander, Daniel Alexander, David Reese, Charles Harris, William Black, James Campbell, Adam Meek, Zaccheus Wilson."
  • Alex Notebooks: "The NC Colonial Records contain a list of the old men who formerly were in Capt. Adam Alexander's Company. Daniel Alexander, Lieutenant; Moses Shelby, Sergeant; Privates Andrew Alexander, Aaron Alexander and Moses Alexander. Endorsed by Robert Harris, Clerk Feb 24 1756. The Capt. Alexander mentioned was days was Colonel of the Mecklenburg Militia.(ref. NC State Records, Vol. 12 pp 396-97-98). Identity of these old men were as follows:
- Moses Shelby was the son of Evan Shelby of Frederick Co. MD and the oldest brother of Mary Shelby wife of Col. Adam Alexander…"
