Biography

Barbara Alexander was born in Topsham, York, Province of Maine about 1741. She was the daughter of James Alexander of Topsham, her mother unknown. The farm of her father, James, was entered into Town records in 1738, three years before Barbara's birth.

Barbara married Robert Douglass Sr. (b. in Wells) in Topsham on October 2, 1761. They resided in four Maine locations over their years respectively including Topsham, Damariscotta, North Haven (then part of Vinalhaven), and Isle au Haut. Among these locations, they had nine children including Margaret b. 1762, Robert Jr. b. abt. 1764, Barbara b. 1764, James b. 1766, John b. 1768, Mary b. Dec. 1768, William b. abt. 1781, Capt. James b. 1781, and Betsey b. 1784.

After the death of her husband, Barbara lived with her daughter Betsey (m. Beverage) and passed away in North Haven as a widow on November 20, 1832 at the age of 90+. Barbara's "Death Record, as found in the North Haven Baptist Church Records: Nov 20 1832, Mrs Douglass, a member of this church.
