Biography

Birth

Agnes Alexander was likely born about 1730-1740 based on her marriage. She has been estimated as born about 1734 in Lebanon, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, or York County, Pennsylvania.[1] A specific source for her birth and parents has not been identified.

Note #1: The American Genealogical-Biographical Index lists Agnes Kelly Alexander, born 1740 in Ire, Pennsylvania. It is not clear if this is the same person.[2]

Note #2: The Daughters of the American Revolution Lineage Book Vol 138, identifies a descendant of Thomas Welch who married in 1764 to Nancy Alexander (born 1746).[3] This appears to be the basis for Agnes acquiring the double name Nancy Agnes in various online family trees. However double names were uncommon in that period, and she is not referred to as Nancy in any other known document. Possibly this was an error in her name in this Lineage book.

Marriage

Agnes Alexander married Thomas Welsh on 7 Jan 1756 in Paxtang, Pennsylvania.[4]

Residence

In the 1790 census, Thomas Welch was living in Rowan, North Carolina. His household included one male under 16, one male 16 and over (Thomas) and one female (assumed to be Agnes).[5]

In 1793, her husband Thomas Welch was living in Rutherford, North Carolina. Agnes was alive at that time.[6]

Death

It is not known when Agnes died.[1] Her husband Thomas Welch wrote his will on 21 Aug 1793, which identifies his wife Agnes, so she was living at that time and would have died later, probably in Rutherford, North Carolina where they were living.[6]

Children

The will of Thomas Welch of 1793 identifies sons James, Thomas, John, David and Joseph, and daughters Elisabeth Mcgaughy, Agnes Riggs, Mary Snowden, and Jean Proctor.[6]
