Biography

Elsy was born in February 1878 in the copper mining town of Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. At that time, Moonta and surrounding towns were experiencing the height of the copper mining boom and formed what was known as "Australia's Little Cornwall". Her father, James later took an appointment as Bank Manager at Mount Gambier.

It was here, at the age of 22 on 25 July 1900, that Elsy married successful banker and businessman, Herbert James Clezy, aged 33. The Marriage Register shows that they were married at the "Australian English Scottish Bank, Mount Gambier". The family prospered in business and in child raising. Their first son, John Alexander, was born on 3 August 1901. He was followed in the next year by Herbert Humphris, on 9 October 1902 and on 15 May 1904, by Bruce Aberdein. The family were at that time living at a Penola Road property. They then added two additional sons and two daughters to the growing Mount Gambier community -the children are listed in the profile for her husband (Clezy-4)

Their grandson, Dr. Peter Steele Clezy, wrote: "The children's names are interesting. It was mandatory to call the first born son John and Alexander was Elsy's maiden name. Herbert and Elsy were named after their parents while Humphris was the maiden name of Herbert Snr.'s maternal grandmother and not derived from a tomato sauce bottle as Herbert Jnr. insisted in later life. Robert was one of Herbert's brothers while Harvey was the maiden name of his mother-in-law. Jane was named after Herbert's mother who had died not long before Jane was born while Fordyce was derived from the Harvey side of the family. Douglas and Bruce were new ventures for Clezy nomenclature and Aberdein comes from the Harvey side of the family."

Elsy passed away in 1963, age 85.
