By the time Nel-Margaret was in high school, Nellie was working on the Berkeley HS campus making grilled sandwiches at a little snack shop in an area well known as "the slope".

Timeline

Sometime between 1903 and 1907 Alva was transferred to Las Vegas, New Mexico. While Nellie was pregnant with their second child in 1908, she developed goiters on her neck. That problem together with carrying a large child endangered her health, to the point that she had to leave the higher altitude of Las Vegas and return to Guthrie where Alden Thomas was born on July 24, 1908.

1919 Influenza epidemic; Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas, USA In 1919, Nellie had the flu. There was a terrible epidemic that year and many people died, but Nellie survived. However, she became tired of driving Alva to work in town and taking the three older children to school, so when it came time for Nel-Margaret to start school, they sold the farm and Moved back to town in 1920.

Summer 1923 Moved to Fresno, Fresno County, California

Note: Alva entered the Santa Fe hospital in Topeka, Kansas and Nellie Moved the four children to Fresno. She found a house and the railroad shipped the household goods and the car. She got a job in a place where fancy dried fruit boxes were packed, but later worked in a large department store selling yardage and patterns.

1926 Moved to Berkeley, Alameda County, California In 1926, Richmond, California was just a small town and not a very good place to live, so the family settled in 1625 Francisco St., Berkeley. This began a period of many years living in Berkeley. Alva worked and Nellie took care of the home and the children. 1929 Berkeley, Alameda County, California Much of their lives centered around Calvary Presbyterian Church. Nellie was active in the Women's Society where her cooking talents made many luncheons and dinners especial events.

Aft 1929 Berkeley, Alameda County, California There were potluck suppers and volleyball in the Calvary Presbyterian Church gym. Nellie loved to have the young people come over. The children used to go caroling on Christmas morning after which Nellie would prepare breakfast for them with freshly made biscuits. At that time many of the good folks in the church disapproved of dancing but Nellie and Alva let the children dance to radio music. Nellie said in later years that she still m issed having a gang of kids coming to the house.
